Higher precision of diameter and ovality measurement using MSD technology


ZUMBACH models display outstanding performance in the continuous, systematic production monitoring and quality control of cables, wires and plastics. In order to achieve optimum efficiency in terms of price and performance, we are expanding the model range for production monitoring and adding a new state-of-the-art series of measuring heads to our ultra-precise laser diameter measuring heads of the ODACÒ series: the MSD diameter gauges with advanced Multi-Source-Device technology. MSD was developed for on-line diameter and ovality measurement and control and for detection of surface defects.


Available in the sizes 20 / 50 / 100 / 200, the MSD series builds on the principle of “linear sensor” technology and with intelligent add-on components offers industrial manufacturing even more precise measured values than in the past. Outstanding: the system is able to evaluate several shadows per axis. MSD allows 4-axis measurement of products up to 54 mm, with 2 axes up to 200 mm.


Measuring principle

The patent-pending Multi-Source-Device system (MSD) integrates up to eight point-like light sources. The LEDs project the shadow of the object to be measured on a line sensor. The line sensor calculates the position of the shadows with active redundancy. The gauge uses this information to derive various measuring points and reliable statements on ovality and diameter.

Thanks to the multi-axis light measurement and integrated RS, DP or EN interface, even the smallest deviations in the measured dimension are captured and processed, as are any surface defects.  Calibration via a range of interfaces is carried out during the production process with ease and minimal delay.



No external light influence

In order to ensure maximally undisrupted measurements, Zumbach has equipped the MSD gauges (25 / 50 / 100 / 200) with additional intelligent components. The measurements are not influenced by external light at any time.


  1. MSD utilises LED illumination in various colours for the axes. The risk of mutual perturbance of the measuring axes during simultaneous measurement is eliminated, even for reflective products.
  2. The integrated external light filter prevents ambient light affecting the measurement.

This further increases the measuring accuracy.


Data Processing

All MSD models offer interfaces for data measurement further processing and for communicating with ZUMBACH data acquisition, processing and display systems or other higher order systems.

If the functionality, performance and capital commitment of the MSD models are considered together, the new series reveals itself as extremely efficient in measuring wires, cables and plastics. In tube and hose extrusion lines, the gauges are indispensable aids for measuring pressure, waste water, heating tubes and much more.
