During full‑speed operation on a hot rolling line, a downstream fault caused a flat steel profile to stop moving forward. With the profile still being produced upstream, the material had nowhere to go. The hot steel, glowing at roughly 1200°C, began to back up into the PROFILEMASTER® SPS.
Inside the SPS, the stationary profile started to buckle, twist, and coil, eventually filling the measurement chamber with intensely hot, tightly wound steel. This situation continued for over an hour before it was detected and the line was shut down.

The Aftermath: A Surprising Result

Given the extreme temperatures and the sheer mass of red‑hot steel inside the device, one might expect catastrophic damage. Instead, the outcome was far less dramatic:

• Only a single protective glass window shielding one of the CMOS cameras was damaged.
• The internal electronics, optics, structural elements, and measurement components remained intact.
• Once the window was replaced, the PROFILEMASTER® SPS was returned to operation with no further repairs required.

For a system exposed to conditions far outside any normal operating envelope, this performance speaks volumes.
